Cavan Burren

The Ultimate Homeschooling Field Trip in Ireland

🏞️ Our Homeschooling Adventure at Cavan Burren Park

When you homeschool, every day can become a classroom. 📚 This week, our classroom wasn’t the kitchen table—it was out among 5,000-year-old tombs, glacial boulders, and limestone landscapes at Cavan Burren Park in Ireland.

Armed with sketchpads, snacks, and big imaginations, the kids and I stepped onto the trails and instantly felt like we were walking through history. 🌍 This isn’t just a forest park—it’s a living outdoor museum of geology, archaeology, and Irish mythology.

🌿 Learning History in the Open Air

➡️ Calf House Portal Tomb (5,000 years old!) – The kids loved hearing how it was later reused as a cattle shelter. They sketched its giant capstone while we talked about why ancient people chose stone. ✏️

➡️ Tullygobban Wedge Tomb – Linked to the legendary builder Gobán Saor. We turned maths into movement by measuring it with footsteps—history and numeracy combined. ➗👣

🪨 Geology Beneath Our Feet

Everywhere we looked, enormous glacial boulders told the story of Ireland’s Ice Age. ❄️ We studied fossils in the limestone 🐚 and imagined rivers once disappearing into sinkholes. Suddenly, geology wasn’t abstract—it was alive under our boots. 👟

🧙 Folklore Comes Alive

At the Giant’s Grave Wedge Tomb, legend says a giant fell trying to impress a giantess. The kids retold the story in their own words, carrying Irish folklore forward in a magical way. ✨

Nearby, limekilns from the 18th–19th centuries sparked conversations about farming methods and soil—connecting old practices with our own garden at home. 🌱

🏰 Layers of the Past

From an Iron Age fort built 2,000 years ago 🛡️ to a hidden Mass Rock used during the Penal Laws ✝️, every step revealed another layer of Ireland’s history.
