Why Did We Start Homeschooling?

It took me about 4 years to find out about our homeschooling flow and not worry about books not being finished and to be honest I was very overwhelmed at the beginning. Like some of us I started homeschooling during the Covid era and was keen on those teachers’ notes to land in my mailbox, waiting for every single task and meticulously processing every homework with the kids. At the time, we only had the 2 little ones in the same grade thankfully, but neither less to say the amount of work given on top of everything else was very overwhelming. I probably can still find one of those word doc the teacher sent me for reference haha

After that we moved to our new home, put the kids in a much smaller rural school and had them mixed up with 2 different level classes with only one teacher! Yes very common in the rural areas. At first I thought, wow that’s amazing, the kids are going to make most of it, they’ll have all the teacher’s attention, she’ll be more patient yadiyadiya… little did I know that my kids were just a ‘number’. Shortly after a lot of little ‘issues’ started to happen ie my son wasn’t paying enough attention, he has a speech delay due to a cleft of the soft palate, but instead of caring for that, they still wanted him to be at the same level as everybody else! I was caught doubting myself and himself, to the stage where I thought the teacher and principal were right and my poor little one wasn’t doing things on purpose. Until the day came where I have been advised to have him see a psychologist and then they suggested putting him in a special school…. I was distraught, my heart sank, I could do better! SOOOOO here goes to say that the first year I kept following the school regimen and then as we were struggling to finish those books and getting the kids attention I decided what if I ditch this book, that book, what could happen? Well nothing really! I started reading loads of blogs, loads of posts of fellow homeschoolers and realised that I kind of had the ‘power’ to choose what type of homeschooling would fit my family best and so I ditched more of those books and went on to find what will make the kids learn without boredom.
