Experience a Day in Our Homeschooling Life, You Will Love It!
A Fun & Full Day in Our Homeschooling Life
If there’s one thing I’ve learned homeschooling my two curious learners (currently 4th grade: I am just giving a reference here and yes sometimes I still use books from school like Maths, Spellbound and Writing but that doesn’t define them, I should really say, my 10 and 11 years old :))
To get back to my first thought, the one thing I experienced it’s that learning is at its best when it’s playful, story-rich, and real. Today was one of those magical homeschool days—full of questions, laughter, curiosity, and connection.
Here’s a peek into what a vibrant day of experience-led homeschooling looks like in our home.
💶 Learning Through Play: Role-Playing With Euros
We kicked off the morning with a fun math and life skills role play. I set up a mini “shop” using play euro money (you can find this kit at Mr Price as well if there is one around you) and a few household items as “stock.”
I played the shopkeeper first, and the kids took turns budgeting and shopping. Then we switched roles so they could practice giving change, adding prices, and counting aloud—all wrapped up in giggles and teamwork.
This kind of real-life math is one of our favorite ways to reinforce numeracy.
🌍 History Brought to Life: Noor Inayat Khan
We shifted gears and dove into World War II history, beginning with the incredible life of Noor Inayat Khan—a brave spy and wireless operator in Nazi-occupied France. Check out my previous insta post!
Her story of courage captivated the kids, especially when we read the amazing kid’s book: Great Women Who Changed the World and watched the video that helped us visualize her world. They were full of questions—who was fighting whom? Why was it dangerous?
🕊️ Curiosity Leads to World War I
Their curiosity naturally led us backward in time to World War I. So we paused to explore how the war began, who was involved, and what life looked like then.
We watched a kid-friendly breakdown of WWI, pausing the video regularly to ask questions, share thoughts, and connect the dots. These spontaneous conversations are where the magic happens—they think critically, make connections, and deepen their understanding.
🥕 Life Skills at Lunch: Cooking Together
Next up—home economics, aka lunch! The kids joined me in the kitchen to help peel carrots, chop potatoes, and mix spices. We prepped a simple but nourishing meal and popped it in the overhead oven.
Cooking together not only builds skills but gives them ownership in our daily life. And yes—math and science sneak their way in here too through measurements, timing, and flavor balance.
🍀 Irish Storytelling: The Blackbird Comes to Ireland
After lunch, it was time for some storytelling. We cozied up and read “Who Brought the Blackbird to Ireland?” from Fionn MacCumhail’s Epic Adventures.
I couldn’t resist doing the voices—impersonating the characters brought the myth alive, and the kids were completely drawn in. Storytelling like this helps build listening skills, comprehension, and imagination.
📚 Afternoon Reading Time
To finish the day, we continued with our summer library reading challenge. Each child picked their book and read 10 pages aloud, taking turns and discussing the story.
One of the favorites right now is “The Shop of Impossible Ice Creams” — a magical, whimsical read that makes them giggle and stretch their vocabulary.
And we ended the day painting outside!
🌟 Why This Day Worked
What made today special wasn’t just the content—it was the flow. From math through play, to history through stories, to cooking and collaborative reading—it all felt connected and meaningful.
If you’re homeschooling 4th graders, flexibility, creativity, and a bit of structure go a long way. You don’t need a rigid curriculum or hours of worksheets. Kids learn beautifully when they’re engaged, moving, and curious.
🧡 Final Thoughts (From One Homeschooling Parent to Another)
Homeschooling allows us to nurture learning at our own rhythm—with heart, relevance, and fun. Days like this remind me that education is a living, breathing journey—and our home is the perfect place for it to grow.
