Have You Ever Had a Beautiful Homeschooling Day Off?
Today was one of those beautiful Homeschooling Day Off that actually teach us the most.
We took a gentle step away from structured homeschooling and embraced a bit of freedom. No pressure. No worksheets. Just life — lived and learned together.
And you, fellow homeschoolers? Have you ever had a homeschooling day off?
📚 A Trip to the Local Library
We headed to our local library this morning, which is currently running a Summer Reading Challenge. The kids were thrilled to receive canvas tote bags and reading record cards, where they track their finished books. So far, they’ve read three each — and yes, we had to renew two from last week because we ran out of time (and that’s perfectly okay!).
No stress here — I truly believe in homeschooling without pressure. Every book completed is a celebration, not a race.
🧠 Shopping Game: Learning Percentages in Real Life
After the library, we stopped by the shops. I decided to introduce percentages in a way that made it exciting and rewarding. I asked each child,
“What’s 50% of €5?”
Whoever got it right could keep the €5. One of them nailed it — the others didn’t, but we used that moment to talk about how mistakes are part of learning, and there’s always next time. We also had a lovely little chat about jealousy, emotions, and kindness. (Oh, and yes, some of that money went toward sweets to share 🍬)
🎶 Car Chats and Grooves
On the drive home, we turned up some groovy tunes and talked about rhythm and what a “groove” means in music. I love how learning can sneak in even during car rides.
🍽️ Lunch, Laughs & A Cozy Movie
Back home, the kids helped prep lunch — peeling carrots, chopping potatoes, and choosing spices for our oven roast. It was messy, noisy, and so full of joy.
We closed the curtains and snuggled up for a family movie. Okay — our 2-year-old didn’t nap like she usually does and added some chaos to the room 😄, but it was all part of the memory.
Now that she’s finally asleep, I’m writing this while the big kids roam and play freely. There was no online class today, but I’ll share all about yesterday’s soon — it was a good one!
💭 What’s Your Favourite Off Day?
Some of the most powerful learning happens when you step away from the schedule. Whether it’s in a library, a supermarket, or just cuddled on the couch — it all counts.
Let me know how your restful homeschool days look. 🌿
